NATIONAL EISTEDDFOD ACADEMY
Introduction:
The mission of the NEA is to present the annual Eisteddfod and other related activities, as opportunities where participants can develop the courage to take a stand in this world while developing their diverse artistic potential.
The long-term objective is to establish, develop and sustain the NEA nationally on sound business principles as a reputable organisation (not for gain) for your development in the arts.
The NEA has established and developed the traditional eisteddfod into a no limitations programme that targets the youth, including learners with different abilities, providing for music, dance, visual art and drama in all eleven languages and sign language. During 2011 more than 27 000 learners participated in various items in the respective regions of the NEA. The participants were involved in approximately 10 600 items with 70 adjudicators in over 300 sessions totalling 1 112 hours.
Sequence of the competition:
- The first round normally commences during August and September in the different regions. Maragon has participated in both the Randburg as well as the West Rand, as our school is geographically situated in the centre of these two regions.
- The NEA showcase evenings follow in September/October where learners in the different regions receive awards as item/category winners in their region. There are also Ambassador Awards for outstanding achievements as well as the Top 10 awards. Learners are awarded with special certificates and/or medals. In the past several of our High School and Primary School pupils ended in the Top 10 group.
- Then follows the second round, where learners from the different regions compete. This event takes place in January of the following year. Learners are invited to participate on account of their results achieved during the first round. They are awarded special certificates for this event.
- The quarter- and semi-final rounds follow respectively during March and May where learners have to present their items to two independeing adjudicators. Only a few learners manage to reach this point. Learners receive certificates to prove their participation up to this stage.
- The final round is an extremely prestigious event which normally takes place during May/July when only 20 entrants from all the entries out of all the regions (inter-provincial) compete for cash prizes and bursaries. Maragon is fortunate to have ended at the top on at least three occasions.
Maragon's involvement:
Margon enters several learners annually for each NEA season. The Foundation Phase puts the emphasis on group items e.g. Choral Verse, Junior choir etc. to introduce learners to the eisteddfod and to promote mass participation. Talented learners are identified by teachers for participation in individual items. Numerous learners from the Intersen Phase enter for individual items, but groups also participate e.g. the Intersen Choir and Tiener Toneel.
