CRICKET

Cricket takes place during the 3rd and 4th Term. We accommodate all eager cricket players into our teams. Maragon enters into the Central West Cricket League. Our players participate in the Central West and Gauteng Trials every year. Our Maragon players excel every year during these Trials. During 2011 Maraon had 34 players from U/9 to U/13 that made the Central West Teams and 5 players that made the Gauteng Team.

In the 4th Term the semi-finals and finals of the Central West League takes place and our U/11 and U/13 teams play in the Super League of the North West District.

Yearly Tournaments:

  • Goldi Cricket Week in Standerton
  • Central West Night Series

The GMMC (Gun & Moore Maragon Cricket Club) offers private cricket lessons from Mondays to Saturdays on the school premises. This does conflict with the school practices.

CORNWALL CRICKET TEAM

On Friday 10th of February the Cornwall County U/13 team were once again hosted by Maragon as part of their annual tour to South Africa. Unfortunately the fixture rained out and on short notice the U/13 boys from Maragon and England were treated to a great day at the Wanderers Stadium. The staff at the Gauteng Cricket Board took the boys on a tour of the stadium including the underground nets and the scorer's office. The boys got to meet Chris Scott who has been groundsman at the Wanderers for the past 42 years and is a legend "groundsman" in the cricket world. At the time of the tour there was a Supersport fixture being played between the Highfield Lions and the Cape Cobras and our boys were treated to a signing session with both the teams. Getting to meet some of their cricketing heroes like Vernon Philander, Alviro Peterson and Dana Villas to mention a few, was a great opportunity for our boys and left the touring side in awe as to how great our professional cricketers are with the stars of tomorrow.

Once again Maragon was a top host with the families. They treated the boys to dinner at Silverstar Casino.

Cornwall has added Maragon as a permanent fixture on their annual tour of our beautiful country.

ACHIEVEMENTS: 2011

During June of each year our U/11 and U/13 boys brave the cold and join 22 cricket teams from various schools to participate in the Annual Goldi Cricket Week hosted by Learskool Standerton in Mpumalanga.

Both our U/11 and U/13 teams played exceptionally well and were awarded the winners of the week.

A number of individual accolades were achieved by both teams with Graham Voster being awarded Best Fielder of the tournament and Calvin Smith being awarded both the Best Batsman and Best Overall Player of the tournament.

Individual Accolades can be viewed here.

According to Mr Ginger Strydom the main aim of the tour was to let the boys have fun and give everybody the opportunity to play, this was achieved and winning the tournament on top of this was a bonus.
